Federal Energy Management Impact Fellow

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Department of Energy is seeking a fellow for a 1-year term (with potential opportunity to extend) to join the Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP). The Fellow will work closely with FEMP staff and leadership to develop innovative approaches to help Federal offices achieve their critical missions through diverse topics such as: decarbonization, electrification, efficiency, resilient energy, and water systems, understanding the social cost of carbon and greenhouse gas emissions accounting, and alternative financing and performance contracting to help agencies pay for energy retrofits and deploy energy-conserving technologies.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING

The Fellow will have the opportunity to work on several different topics, dependent on interest and development goals. Examples of potential portfolios are described in more detail below:

Decarbonization, Electrification & Efficiency

  • Supporting initiatives that work to electrify the federal fleet, incorporating decarbonization priorities into energy planning and management, leading energy education and training, and piloting grid-enabled technologies.

  • Analyzing the energy and non-energy impacts (including resiliency, health, operations, air quality, etc.) of grid enabled technologies and electrification strategies with follow-on publication case studies, white papers, etc.
  • Planning and preparing Requests for Information and Federal Agency Calls for technology deployment that results in job creation, decreased greenhouse gas emissions, increased use of newly validated technology, and energy and environmental justice.

Energy & Water Resilience

  • Creating a systematic approach to agency and site resilience planning that helps organizations assess current infrastructure against mission priorities and risk, including climate risks, identify solutions, and prioritize solutions and projects for implementation.

  • Conducting analysis to support the implementation of Administration energy and water goals and objectives.
  • Exploring the utilization of the social cost of carbon in Federal Facility rule making and incorporation into performance based contracting mechanisms.
  • Analyzing FEMP tools and resources to determine applicability of including externalities such as the social cost of carbon in analysis output.

  • A background in transportation, public policy, engineering, environmental science or other natural science, and economics or other quantitative discipline.
  • Experience in electric vehicle and infrastructure deployment, energy efficiency or technology, and transportation and alternative fuels preferred.

STIPEND
