ABOUT THE POSITION

The Department of Energy is seeking a fellow for a 1-year term (with potential opportunity to extend) to join the Office of the Under Secretary for Science and Innovation. The Fellow will work closely with multiple cross-cutting DOE offices and leadership on key issues at the intersection of critical technologies and global competitiveness. As part of a new initiative, the Fellow will have the opportunity to gain an understanding of federal processes at a high level and apply their knowledge of various emerging technologies like AI, Machine Learning, or Microelectronics to a dynamic policy landscape.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING

The Fellow will have the opportunity to drive their own work and develop their own portfolio based on their technical background and specific interests, but a broad overview of general responsibilities are below:

  • Overseeing the development of an emerging priority area within the Office of the Under Secretary for Science and Innovation focused on critical and emerging technologies, including:
    • Identifying key opportunities for DOE engagement in various fields of emerging technologies;
    • Convening and organizing key stakeholders from different program offices across DOE and other federal agencies and organizations;
    • Designing foundational processes and strategic plans for programs, teams, or projects;
  • Analyzing the current ‘state of play’ of critical and emerging technologies in order to support DOE initiatives in having the most impact;
  • Developing programs to support policy issues at the intersection of emerging technologies and global competitiveness;
  • Supporting the implementation of recent legislation involving critical and emerging technologies like the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), and the CHIPS and Science Act;
  • Analyzing organizational operations of new programs to ensure impact, efficiency, and effectiveness.
  • Conducting desk research and providing subject matter expertise to direct and guide specific policy actions around emerging technologies related to DOE priorities;

YOUR BACKGROUND AND ABILITIES

  • 战略规划和组织经验l development at a high level;
  • Understanding or technical expertise with one or more fields of critical and emerging technologies, including and not limited to: Artificial Intelligence, Microelectronics, High Performance Computing, Quantum Technology, Engineering, or Global Technology Competitiveness.
  • Interest in and experience with the intersection of technology and policy, especially at the federal and international level;
  • Experience with coordinating, planning, and organizing new initiatives, including engaging diverse sets of stakeholders with varying interests;
  • Ability to perform a wide range of assignments, with limited assistance and supervision, in a wide-ranging, fast-moving environment;
  • Ability to be flexible, adaptable, and develop creative solutions to difficult problems.

EDUCATION & OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Unfortunately, FAS is unable to consider current federal employees for the FAS Impact Fellowship.

STIPEND

This fellowship will provide a stipend for the entirety of the fellowship duration at an annual rate of $155,700 per year. The Impact Fellow will receive an additional stipend of $20,600 to account for health expenses, as well as a $4,000 relocation stipend. ADDITIONAL POSITION INFORMATION
