Associate Director of Communications

Washington, D.C. — Full Time

The Associate Director of Communications will work as part of FAS’s Operations Team to lead the strategic communications and marketing efforts of the organization. This position will involve both proactive planning and implementation of a comprehensive communications strategy as well as reactive, rapid daily interaction on issues related to the Federation. The level of this position may vary depending on the selected candidate’s level of experience. The right candidate will help shape the role according to their skills, and act as a key player toward achieving significant growth and long-term sustainability for the Federation of American Scientists.

Primary Functions & Responsibilities
  • Own the organization’s communications output across all verticals.
  • Manage the day to day operations of the FAS communications team.
  • Develop communications strategies around FAS’s work to ensure that it reaches and provides meaningful and actionable information to target audiences (federal government policymakers, other non-government organizations, private sector, and media).
  • Create systems and processes to streamline communications output in support of FAS’ project teams.
  • Work with the project teams to write, edit and produce world-class external communication content.
  • Maintain and develop relationships with relevant media and key influencers.

Innovation and Technology Senior Manager

The Federation of American Scientists (FAS) is seeking a seasoned manager to support its growing innovation and technology portfolio. Innovation and technology is a core policy vertical within FAS, working across a number of domains from entrepreneurship, international development, climate and clean energy, and more.

The senior manager will work directly with the Principal Director for Innovation and Technology to support activities across the portfolio to oversee and execute policy accelerators, support policy design workshops, engage with federal partners in identifying opportunities for impact, and help stand up emerging organizational initiatives to deliver assistance to federal agencies.

This is an exciting opportunity for an entrepreneurial, resourceful, empathetic individual with cross-cutting skill sets and experience in business, management consulting, and/or public policy to support a growing portfolio of work as FAS looks to grow and expand its offerings in 2022 and beyond.

Experience

A minimum of seven years of professional work that includes some of the following:

  • Direct experience in or collaborating with the federal government and a working understanding of how the federal government functions
  • Experience working in or with the private sector including management consulting, finance, start ups, technology or other related industry
  • Experience applying innovation and design methods including but not limited to crowdsourced innovation, ideation, human centered design, and more

(Senior) Manager for Science Policy and Knowledge Management

Washington, D.C. — Full Time

The Federation of American Scientists (FAS) is seeking a seasoned manager to support its growing science policy portfolio and to lead in coordination and implementation of knowledge management systems across the organization. FAS is at an inflection point with respect to its growth and impact, and this position will provide critical infrastructure for knowledge management to connect FAS’ policy work with the work of the FAS Day One Talent Hub.

The (Senior) Manager for Science Policy and Knowledge Management
will work directly with the vertical director and associate director to support activities across the portfolio, including managing and executing on policy accelerators; supporting policy design workshops; and engaging with science policy thought leaders, funders, and federal partners in identifying opportunities for impact. Additionally this role will oversee the design and implementation of a knowledge management system (e.g. customer relationship management (CRM)) to optimize knowledge sharing across diverse use cases, including but not limited to the pipeline of fellows in the FAS Day One Talent Bank, government agency interest in fellow placement, significant intel from policymaker conversations, funder and donor relations..
